Gallery Chemin Du Bonheur
May 17th – 23rd, 2015
As part of the 10th Anniversary events of Artist-in-Residence Yamanashi, Estonian artist Laura Põld is opening her solo exhibition titled “Road To Silver Mine” at Gallery Chemin du Bonheur in Hokuto-City on May 17th at 3p.m. Põld is showing a painting-installation and seven short stories written on her travels in Japan during spring 2015.
In her practice Laura Põld is mostly working with the perception of place, home, landscape and identity in the context of migration. “After relocating one notices what they are accustomed to: everyday surroundings, architecture, familiar paths, landscape in a broader sense,” the artist explains in her statement. Also the brief encounters in Põld’s short stories from Japan sketch a rendezvous of two contrasting cultures.
In “Road To Silver Mine” Laura Põld is showing her new work created in Kofu and Hokuto as a reflection on the first time stay in Japan, meeting the culture and aesthetics, which lead her to work with patterns and wrappings, exotic interiors and forms. The title “A Road To Silver Mine” comes from one of her short stories based on a one-day trip to Shimane prefecture (Silver Mine – Iwami Ginzan).
Laura Põld was born in 1984 in Tallinn, Estonia. She received her BA in Ceramics from Estonian Academy of Arts (2007) and her MA in Painting from University of Tartu (2010). Põld’s recent solo exhibitions were held at Showroom Gallery Ulrike Hrobsky in Vienna, Austria; Kunstkabinett Altes Rathaus in Bayreuth, Germany; and Gallery Hobusepea in Tallinn, Estonia. In her installations Põld synthesizes a variety of media like painting, wood, ceramics, textile and video.
